DIÉBÉDO FRANCIS KÉRÉ
(Gando, Burkina Faso, 1965) ha studiato presso la Technische Universität Berlin dove insegna attualmente. Mentre studiava, ha fondato l’associazione “Schulbausteine für Gando” per finanziare il suo primo progetto: una scuola elementare per il suo villaggio natale. L’edificio, terminato nel 2001, ha ricevuto l’Aga Khan Award for Architecture per l’esemplarità e l’eleganza ottenute attraverso l’uso di strumenti e tecniche costruttive tradizionali. Nel 2008 ottiene una menzione speciale alla 6th edition of the International Sustainable Architecture Prize, ancora per la scuola nel villaggio Burkina di Dano, ed è uno dei cinque architetti vincitori del Global Award for Sustainable Architecture (2009). La sua ricerca vuole contribuire allo sviluppo e alla messa a punto di strategie costruttive sostenibili per l’architettura locale con attenzione specifica alle questioni dell’adattamento climatico, dei bassi costi e dell’auto costruzione. Egli si definisce “un ponte tra le culture, tra i paesi tecnicamente ed economicamente sviluppati del nord ed i meno sviluppati dell’Africa”. Kéré è già stato ospite presso l’Iuav nei Ws del 2009 e nel 2010 quando il Padiglione Ruanda alla XII Biennale di Architettura ha ospitato un suo progetto. Ha pubblicato in Italia, con E. Diébédo Francis Kéré, Architect from Burkina Faso, studied at the „Technische Universität Berlin“. He focuses on education as the developing concept for his country, in which he has already built an essential infrastructure.
In the focus of Kéré’s drafts are the climatic adaptation, low building costs and the self building: “The community needs to be educated how to monitor the climatic circumstances and to use local materials. Only people who take part in the building process can maintain and spread the word about these architectural projects.” (1)
While he was studying, he founded the association “Schulbausteine für Gando e. V.” for the funding of his first project, a Primary School in his native village. The building was finished in 2001 and received the Aga – Khan – Award for its exemplarity as well as its concise and elegant architecture using basic, constructive instruments. The school is the result of a vision, initially verbalized by the architect and realised by the community. The jury valued especially the great potential of a project which helps the community to develop a healthy pride and hope and creates at the same time a solid base for its development. The fact that Kéré built a Primary School for Gando exemplifies his commitment for education. To him, education is the foundation for every social, technical and economical development.
Meanwhile the Primary School was completed with the Teachers Housing, another school building and a library, so that 900 children can go to school in Gando. Many young men were trained through construction and are now able to find qualified paid work far beyond the region.
Diébédo Francis Kéré connects research and experience as a lecturer at the “Technische Universität Berlin” and as an architect in his own office. His research is contributed to the impartial development of strategies for architecture with local character. As an architect he defines himself as “a bridge between cultures, between the technically and economically developed countries of “the north” and the less developed African countries (the south)” (2)
Diébédo Francis Kéré has been invited at Iuav in 2009 and in 2010 when the Rwanda Pavillion at the XII Biennale di Architettura hosted one oh his last project. Esther Giani edited an interview book to Francis Kéré both in english and italian for Foschi ed.

L’isola di Sacca Fisola è un terreno creato di recente, dove può essere insediato un nuovo habitat per studenti, grazie alla grande potenzialità costruttiva e alla prossimità con l’università, caratteristiche che possono renderla luogo esemplare per la Venezia del presente. Demografia, stile di vita, economie e risorse sono ovunque in mutamento, influenzando la nostra vita e il nostro modo di abitare. Ai partecipanti a questa sfida progettuale si chiede di pensare alla visione del loro spazio vitale nel futuro vicino e lontano. Cerchiamo prototipi sperimentali di vita e di spazi di lavoro, con una riflessione critica sul contesto storico, il patrimonio socio economico ed i cambiamenti climatici. Il sito dell’isola è esposto al fenomeno dell’acqua alta e ciò richiede la progettazione della mobilità sia sull’isola che verso la città. Il fulcro della progettazione è per noi un’innovativa interpretazione della qualità dello spazio, con un alto livello d’interazione e connessione tra gli spazi, una nuova definizione dei luoghi intermedi, un’alta coesione sociale e la realizzazione di spazi per uso misto per integrare la vita degli studenti al contesto dell’isola. Il workshop sarà svolto in inglese.

On the recently filled up island Sacca Fisola in the lagoon of Venice, a new habitat for students will be established. The island has enormous building capacity and is in close proximity to the architecture faculty of the university. Sacca Fisola has the potential to be an example for contemporary Venice.

Demographics, lifestyles, economies and resources are changing: the challenges of today are influencing our life and habitation. We are asking the participants of this design engagement to think about a vision of their own living space for near and remote future.

We are looking for prototypes of experimental living and working spaces with a critical reflection on the historical context, socio-economical background and climatic changes. the specific site of the island is exposed to the rising see-water level and is asking for appropriate mobility on the island and to the main land. our design focus is an innovative interpretation of quality of space, with a high level of interactivity and connection between spaces, a new definition of intermediate spaces, a high social cohesion and mixed-used spaces to integrate students live into the context of the island.
